Surprisingly good parkland course in a remote setting
Located in a heavily wooded highland valley of Kanchanaburi province and near to the Burmese border, Evergreen Hills Golf Club & Resort boasts a mild climate with generally pleasant and cooler temperatures compared to other areas of Thailand. A hidden gem used by locals, expatriates and the professionals who come to compete in national events here, it's a well-designed course kept in remarkably good condition and well worth a visit. In fact, several Thai professional golf events have been held at Evergreen Hills, testament to its quality.
Designed by At-anan Yomchinda and opened in 1994, the 18-hole, par-72 course at 6,879 yards provides a challenge for golfers of all abilities. The narrow fairways, lined with 18 different species of tree species, and steeply sloped greens require accuracy over length. Bunkers come into play on most holes.
The 16th and 17th holes are the most difficult, with water-surrounded island greens. Hole 17, a par-4, is also one of several tricky doglegs at Evergreen Hills with water encroaching on both sides of the hole.
Unfortunately, the clubhouse, on-site resort, and other facilities are no match for the golf course and better suited for locals. Overseas golf visitors will have better luck playing at Evergreen Hills and staying elsewhere. Staff is also local, so visitors should not expect much in the way of English from the starters or caddies. Nevertheless, service is friendly and accommodating.
Despite its shortcomings, Evergreen Hills should be considered by anyone visiting Kanchanaburi, and even for those from Hua Hin looking for something different. This course is maintained to a high standard and offers lots of natural obstacles in a scenic countryside setting.
